Abstract

The article examines how picturebooks can be mediated in English language teaching to support intercultural citizenship education (ICE). The point of departure is the Erasmus project ICETEMP (2024–2027), which focuses on teacher education in seven European contexts. The project is grounded in three central fields: dialogic teaching, ICE in English language education, and the mediation of picturebooks. The project aims to strengthen teachers’ competences in dialogic mediation of picturebooks as a foundation for students' development of intercultural citizenship.

The article introduces a four-phase model for picturebook mediation and focuses on the first phase: the selection of picturebooks. Using a selection guide as an analytical framework, the picturebook The Island (Greder, 2007) is analysed to explore its potential for dialogic read-aloud practices. The analysis shows that the picturebook is well suited for working with ICE-related themes in the upper primary/lower secondary grades, and that the guide can serve as a useful tool and support teachers' identification of ICE themes and in making informed pedagogical choices.
