Mellemkrigsdystopiens kritik af den spæde velfærdsstat
Keywords:

In this article, I analyze the maternal relationship between citizen and state in the interwar dystopia with a focus on Karin Boye’s Kallocain. I contextualize through the economic discussions in the period, as well as briefly outline international parallels through two other dystopias from the period, from UK and Soviet Russia respectively. By engaging the psychoanalytic notion of the mother-complex, I discuss how the state in Kallocain provides materially for its inhabitants, as well as the way the protagonist has internalized the state’s demands, and I analyze the consequences of such a relationship. Finally, I examine Kallocain’s portrayal of an alternative life form and collectivity and how this relates to a notion of maternal love.
