Palestinian Resistance from the PLO to Hamas

The article analyses Palestinian resistance from 1948 to today. It has taken many forms including political mobilization, literature, armed struggle, and international solidarity. For much of this period, the outside world generally viewed Palestinian resistance struggle as terrorism, no matter whether it was aimed at civilian, military or political targets. How do Palestinians view their own struggle and how have positions and strategies changed over time? Drawing on the author’s research on Palestinian history and the global Palestine Solidarity Movement, the article outlines the dilemmas that have faced Palestinians since 1948 as they have navigated changing regional politics, Cold War and post-Cold War geopolitics, and culture wars globally that have placed Palestine at the center of broader debates about imperialism, colonialism, race, and resistance. Faced with a new set of difficult choices after the (apparent) end of the war in Gaza, what historical lessons can Palestinians and others draw from this history?
