Det geo-æstetiske Arktis og Jette Bangs film (1938-1939)

Ud fra den antagelse, at der findes et overlap mellem arktisk geopolitik, historisk kolonialisme og billedpraksis, introducerer og reflekterer denne artikel over fundet af en håndfuld længe heng(l)emte film af Jette Bang (1914-1964) – den danske kvindelig fotograf, der er kendt for sine fotografier af det koloniserede Kalaallit Nunaat. Filmene, der viser landets tidlige modernisering, har som kulturelt arkiv været genstand for studier af fortællingen om ‘Grønland’ i Danmark. Til forskel fra det, tilgår denne artikel Bangs film som et æstetisk arkiv, der udfordrer kuldens konventionelle geo-æstetik. I kontekst af Arktis som et hotspot for klimaændringer i nutiden, og kulturhistoriske forestillinger om regionen som et øde hinsides europæisk civilisationen , reflekterer artiklen således over, hvordan spørgsmål vedrørende repræsentation af Arktis ikke kan adskilles fra spørgsmål vedrørende billedfremstilling (præsentation) som videnspraksis. I lyset af hvordan billeder af og fra Arktis antages at have en afgørende effekt på verden og fremskynde til (fremtidige) handlinger på grund af regionens nøglerolle i kulturelle forestillinger om planetens fremtid og dens politiske og økologiske systemer, er artiklens grundlæggende sigte at adressere risikoen for at æstetisere og påtvinge koloniale rammer for produktion af Arktisk fremtid(er) vis-a-vis produktion af billeder.
