Abstract

It is uncommon for social science students to write the master’s thesis as part of their supervisor's research. Correspondingly sparse literature adds a call for efforts at institutional level (Hansen et al. 2020, Wichmann-Hansen et al. 2021). This article presents an effective model for including students in research (SIiR). Benefits for researchers and students from participating in SIiR is investigated on the basis of 45 semi-structured qualitative interviews. The researchers expand their understanding of their own research through the students' different perspectives and obtain new types of empirical data, which the researchers do not have access to produce themselves. The students expand their learning space through access to actors who would otherwise be inaccessible to them. Researcher openness and enforcement of student autonomy (Ankersborg 2022) as well as an equal relationship between researcher and student are decisive factors for participants’ sensemaking of SIiR.
