Abstract

The article examines in which ways the resonance theory, as put forward by sociologist Hartmut Rosa (2013, 2014, 2020, 2021), can respond to how we care for the welfare professionals in the current crisis. Since these are value-rational and action-oriented professions, the authors argue that there is a need for concrete and action-oriented solutions. The article explores whether the resonance theory, in conjunction with other theories, has the potential to guide action. This is done by combining Rosa’s idea that resonance can serve as ‘a compass’ (Rosa, 2021, p. 522) with pedagogue Paulo Freire’s theory of conscientization, critical reflection, and action through dialogue (1970), and the ethics of philosopher Emmanuel Lévinas (2020). With this starting point, welfare professionals can influence the quality of their work life through a new orientation towards resonance; always with a focus on improving the conditions for vulnerable people. With the combination of theories, the article points towards new possibilities in for welfare professionals - a working life where a collective movement towards resonance leads us away from an individualized and psychologized response to a structurally based crisis. Main points in the article are illustrated through examples from a recently completed international research- and development project on urban vulnerability.
