Abstract

The article presents ethnomethodological conversation analysis (EMCA) as an approach to studying working life practices in real time. It builds on an ongoing discussion of the ways in which a practice theoretical perspective can inform working life studies but focuses on the methodological implications of this perspective. It introduces the fundamental principles of EMCA, and it discusses the practical consequences for the production and interpretation of empirical material. It exemplifies the analytical principles of EMCA with an analysis of the organization of work time in flexible knowledge work, and it discusses the potential shortcomings of EMCA as an approach to studying working life practices through a critical reflection on the notion of context.
