The article is Svend Brinkmann’s Løgstrup Lecture from 2022, held at Aarhus University, Denmark. K.E. Løgstrup was a Danish theologian and philosopher, and in the article, implications of his thought for psychology are introduced and discussed. The article explains Løgstrup’s formulation of the so-called ethical demand: That human lives are interdependent, which means that we cannot avoid having power over each other, or holding something of the life of the other in our hands. It is argued that psychology should take seriously the fact that humans are creatures with hands – and not just heads and eyes – to the effect that we exist in the world as acting, handling, and world-involved creatures. From this perspective, the article develops a critique of homo psychologicus, i.e., an image of human beings as depicted by the science of psychology, and some implications for culturally prevalent ideas of personal development, emotions, and power are brought forth and discussed.
