Abstract

This paper uses the current recommendations from the Committee for Robustness to examine what type of digitalisation may contribute to increased digitalisation of patient-centred care in the healthcare system. A selection of recent digital healthcare solutions is evaluated concerning their degree of patient-centredness and innovative potential from a patient-user perspective. Three main areas of digitalisation are identified: communication and sharing of information, support of patient education and self-care, and digitalised interaction and intervention. The pros and cons of a digitalised healthcare system concerning patients’ access to and collaboration with the healthcare system, as well as the preferences for and acceptance of digitalisation, are discussed. The user perspective is found to be essential to the innovation process if a digitalised healthcare system is to offer individual, relevant, personalised healthcare in the future.
