Abstract

The use of symbols in modem poetry is being discussed. The claim is, that the symbols in modernism are detached from all established, allegoric patterns. They are loaded with a force of their own, in a way they are becoming their own symbol. The exemplification from Danish poetry concentrates on three symbols: the stringed instrument, closed eyes and the flood.
