Abstract

The historical development of the psychoanalytic conception of the therapeutic alliance is outlined - including important critique of the concept. The alliance is defined against related concepts like transference and the real relationship. There is given an account of the commonly used operationalizations of the therapeutic alliance and the major findings of the empirical exploration of the alliance is presented. It is discussed how the empirical results can be applicated in clinical practice.
