I denne artikel fremskrives en forståelse af psykologiske fænomener som værende fundamentalt knyttet til de steder, de udøves, og det diskuteres, hvordan deltagerobservation som metodologi kan bruges til at udforske dette. Gennem en kritisk historisk og geografisk tilgang illustreres det, at psykologiske fænomener må forstås i deres udøvelse gennem sociale praksisser organiseret konkrete steder. Deltagerobservation fremhæves her som en relevant metode til at flytte forståelsen af psykologien ud af hovedet og ind i de institutionelle geografier, hvorigennem det psykologiske liv organiseres og udfoldes, og hvor det psykologiske subjekt konstitueres.
