Abstract

In this article, a reasoning model for horse-assisted interventions is presented. Horse-assisted interventions are increasingly being used to promote physical, psychological, and social well-being, as well as development, recovery, and rehabilitation in individuals. The article describes and argues for using the reasoning model as an analytical tool, as it can be challenging to comprehend the complexity of interactions, communication, and reactions that occur between participants, horses, and professionals in different
settings. The model is experience-based and developed over several years of practice, primarily in social psychiatric environments, where we use it to support goal directedness and professionalism of efforts, as well as for documentation and quality control. The authors’ system-theoretical approach, combined with a socio-pedagogical framework of understanding, makes the model applicable in a wide range of contexts where horse-assisted interventions are utilised. A case is used to illustrate the practical use of the model.
