Policy makers and providers of educational technology, ‘ed-tech’, have long, optimistically, and forcefully, promoted digital technologies as means to improve education (Laufer et al., 2021; Sancho-Gil et al., 2020; Selwyn, 2014; 2016). In this article, we propose hope as an alternative to the high expectations and stupid optimism that surrounds the ed-tech debates, practice, and policy which seems to have been enforced by the corona pandemic (Facer & Selwyn, 2021). Based on main results from a study of online teaching in Danish Higher Education during the corona lock-down (Georgsen & Qvortrup, 2021), we discuss how different understandings of hope (Webb, 2007; 2013; 2019) and Illich’ (1973) notion of ‘convivial tools’, can provide a more nuanced foundation for application of digital technology particularly in online education. The article, thus, constitutes a theoretical contribution to the field.
