Abstract

The article proposes that the representation of blood as visual, metaphoric and sensuous element plays a crucial part in works by Hermann Nitsch, Gilbert & George and Rasmus Røhling, all represented in the collection of the National Gallery in Denmark. In the analysis, it is discussed how blood takes part in the photographic meaning-making. In very different aesthetic expressions, the three artists stresses qualities in photographic images such as the performative, the staged and the indexical.
