This article is an interpretative study of residential homes as family-like environments for children and youth. Originally, the data were collected to fulfill other purposes than the crucial point here. Thus, they are reinterpreted from the viewpoint of emotions. Utilizing Goffman’s famous concept ‘asylum’ and social pedagogic analytics, the article presents and assesses residential home architecture, material and cultural structure as oppressive and emancipating means to help and support children and youth. In particular, the article scrutinizes the emotional challenges faced by ‘inmates’ and professionals. The conclusion focuses on various patterns of behavior derived from ‘the account of emotions’.
