The purpose of this article is to explore Lectio as a current motivational technology in Danish high schools with a student perspective. It’s written in a context of understanding data as performative and motivation as something that must be produced. Through interviews with students, I study the performative effects of data in the forms of grades, absence, and assignments. The analytic work shows that the students consciously make decisions regarding their use of Lectio and some by avoiding certain data with the purpose of simultaneously avoiding unpleasant emotions. Other students use data to their own advantage by letting them determine whether some classes and assignments can be skipped. This leads to a discussion of whether this study is part of a bigger tendency of using data as motivational technologies. And further if the students’ reactions to data is connected to a current time of social media, self-representations, and comparisons.
