“It is tempting to just abolish Aula,” said Mette Frederiksen from the podium during the opening of the Danish Parliament in 2023. She explained that she had not met many parents who were happy with Aula. But what is really at stake when teachers and parents try to create school-home collaboration via a digital platform? Aula is full of messages for parents about everything from homework and school-home discussions, to small reminders about things that students and parents need to remember. This can be seen as a result of a political strategy on parental involvement, the purpose of which is to increase the school’s ability to support students’ learning and well-being, and which Aula has been given a central role in realizing. Our study shows that the challenge with Aula is that digital communication lacks the analog tools that support meaning-making across senders and recipients of the communication.
