Resumé

The recent sample translation of Genesis and Song of Songs is all over promising as a fresh proposal, though still grounded in ecclesial tradition. However, it is surprising that there is no indication of a discussion of the translation of Gen 1:1 (“In the beginning”) which is important as compared to the connection to the Christian concept of creatio ex nihilo. Another important discussion missing is of the translation of El Shaddai, where the sample translation preserves “God Almighty”, a translation dependent on the Greek pantokrator. Over all the translators have succeeded in retaining the poetic and erotic timbre of the Song of Songs.
