Abstract
This article explores and discusses the positive and negative meanings of screening and its possible effects on individuals and society. It focuses on the consequences for the feeling of the body and self. I argue that screening in addition to saving lives and giving peace of mind also provides uncertainty and anxiety. Screening creates an uncertain relationship with the body. Screening possibly causes worries and thinking of risks (instead of thinking of possibilities), dependence of experts and ignoring signals from the body. Screening is a preventive arrangement that does not necessarily provide opportunities of a good and sound life. The article suggests an increased focus on body-consciousness as the number of screening programmes increase – and it contributes to the discussion about the ethical aspects of increased screening of healthy people for potential future diseases.
