Abstract

Sociologist Hartmut Rosa’s theory of the ‘acceleration society’ argues that we tend to ignore the uncontrollable and forget what it means to be in resonance with the world. This trend also affects our understanding of and connection with spirituality. In the context of life-threatening illness, the changes the planned course of life, changes to the body and the disruption to everyday life that ensues can leave the dying person feels disconnected on several levels. This paper explores a possible understanding of spirituality as spaces of resonance, which connect the dying person to the world despite their impending death. The paper draws on examples from palliative care practice reflected in the light of Rosa’s thesis and the Danish theologians Kierkegaard and Løgstrup.
Two dimensions of resonance are explored: the sensuous dimension and the dimension of timeliness. The sensuous dimension is one in which aesthetic impressions create the possibility of connection with life, even in the presence of death. ‘Timeliness’, is a reflective dimension focused on seeking meaning in life towards death. Both dimensions have potential to connect a dying person to life through these ‘gates’ of sensuous impressions and reflection. This paper argues that a concept of spirituality that incorporates resonance can be relevant for various professionals in the field of palliative care. However, resonance is a mode and not a quantifiable goal. Thus it concerns an approach, in which the practitioner enables the possibility of resonance for the dying person.
