Author Guidelines

Tidsskrift for Forskning i Sygdom og Samfund (Journal of Research in Disease and Society) primarily publishes articles that are part of theme issues. However, we also include articles 'outside the theme issue' if they deal with relevant issues (according to the journal's purpose).

We publish the following types of contributions:

  • Original articles
  • Overview articles
  • Essays
  • Book reviews

Original articles

We publish original articles that systematically and investigatively produce our own empirical research through a presentation of background, method, theoretical approach, analysis, discussion and conclusion. These points are indicative of content and do not necessarily have to be reflected in sections/headings of an article. Emphasis is placed on:

- the originality and significance of the contribution

- inclusion of anthropology/medicine, humanities/health sciences

- inclusion of relevant existing literature

- secure connection between method, analysis and interpretation, including convincing argumentation for/discussion of the researcher's choices and conclusions.

Scope: Max 9000 words incl. Danish and English abstract (max 250 words each), notes, reference list

Overview articles

We publish review articles that, based on a precisely defined topic, provide a comprehensive overview based on a critical review of existing knowledge and point to the necessary new research. Emphasis is placed on:

- the well-defined focus and importance of the contribution

- inclusion of anthropology/medicine, humanities/health sciences

- a systematic, critical inclusion of existing knowledge

- clear professional positioning of author

- justification for choice of overview angle (historical, methodological, conceptual clarification, theoretical, etc.)

Scope: Max 12000 words incl. Danish and English abstract (max 250 words each), notes, reference list

Essays

We publish essays that convey a topic where the author's professional insight has given rise to expressing a reasoned position on a topic. Emphasis is placed on:

- that the text is rounded and relevant

- the importance of new thinking and new ideas

- fascinates and challenges the reader with surprising formulations, juxtapositions and viewpoints

Scope: 3000 words incl. notes and references. Abstract is not necessary for essays.

Reviews

In addition, we are happy to receive relevant reviews of books etc. These must not exceed 1500 words in length.

Designing a manuscript

Language

The manuscript must follow standard orthography in one of the Scandinavian languages. We exceptionally accept manuscripts in English, and only if there is a reasonable reason for this (e.g. PhD article to be written in English; English-language author). For English manuscripts, professional language revision and proofreading is the responsibility of the author. The editors also do not have the capacity to proofread Norwegian or Swedish, and it is therefore also the author's responsibility that Norwegian or Swedish manuscripts have been proofread. We value clear, precise language.

Setup

Manuscripts must be submitted as word files and set up in Times New Roman font size 12 and one and a half line spacing. Shorter quotations (under 3 lines) are placed in the text in "quotation marks". If they are longer (more than 3 lines), they are placed as independent sections indented from both the left and right margins.

Content of Submissions

The manuscript is submitted electronically via the journal's website. On the website, you create yourself as 'author' and then follow the instructions for submission.

The articles must be designed according to this standard and submitted in the following documents:

  1. Document: front page with author(s), title (both in original language and in English) and corresponding author
  2. Document: article text with Danish and English abstract, main text with intermediate headings, quotations, literature references, reference list incl. doi numbers as well as any notes (endnotes) and any illustrations, tables and figures with explanatory text and source indication.
  3. Document: Brief author description indicating education, employment and research area (max 50 words)

In addition, the following information is entered under the item 'metadata':

  1. Title
  2. Authors
  3. Abstract
  4. Reference list incl. doi numbers

References

Indication of references follows the principles of APA output style. It is the author's responsibility that the reference list is correctly drawn up. On all references that have a DOI, the DOI number must be stated and the reference list/literature list must both be entered in the 'metadata' when submitting the manuscript as well as in the document with the article text.

When specifying page numbers in connection with citations, page numbers are marked with a comma (Surname 1998, 207) or with s' (Surname, 2000, p. 207). The choice between the two must be consistent throughout the article.

See examples below:

Book: Bourdieu, P. (1977). Outline of a theory of practice. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press.

Book Chapter: Macintyre, S., & Ellaway, A. (2000). Ecological approaches: Rediscovering the role of the physical and social environment. In: Berkman, L.F. & Kawachi, I. (eds.), Social Epidemiology (pp. 332-348). New York: Oxford University Press.

Article: Cheek, J. (2004). At the Margins? Discourse analysis and qualitative research. Qualitative Health Research, 14, 1140–1150. doi: 10.1177/1049732304266820.

Web references must be specified with the full URL (web address) and indication of when the website was visited. In addition, information about the author is also provided when this is possible. If possible, web references should be inserted in the same way as other references.

Notes are placed after the text and the note number is placed in the text in raised petit script. Enter the note references manually (avoid word processors' footnote and endnote functions).

Process

The journal undertakes the final editing, proofreading and typesetting. The comma sentence will be corrected according to the language board's recommendations.

The journal makes no commitment in advance to print articles, either invited or unsolicited. Suitable manuscripts are sent for peer review. After peer review and revision of the manuscript, the editors can assess 1) that the manuscript is ready for proofreading and printing, or 2) that the manuscript goes to a further revision round based on the editors' comments.
