Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format
  • When available, the DOI refererences are provided, including those for open access versions of the reference. The DOI must be in a hyperlink.
  • The text is 1,5 -spaced; Times New Roman str. 12 and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About -> Submissions.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Manuscript instructions

The Journal of Research in Sickness and Society publishes the following types of contributions:

Original research which systematically and exploratively presents own empirical research through a presentation of background, method, theoretical approach, analysis, discussion and conclusion. These elements are a guide to the content and should not necessarily be reflected in sections or headings in a paper. The following should be emphasized:

  • Originality and significance of the contribution
  • Involvement of anthropology/medicine, humanities/health sciences
  • Involvement of relevant literature
  • Consistency between method, analysis and interpretation, including convincing argumentation/discussion of the choices and conclusions made by the author

Review article which conveys a comprehensive overview of a precisely defined topic, based on a critical review of existing knowledge of the topic, and points to the needs for new research. The following should be emphasized:

  • A properly delimited focus and significance of the contribution
  • Involvement of anthropology/medicine, humanities/health sciences
  • A systematical and critical involvement of existing knowledge
  • A clear professional positioning of the author
  • A justification of the review approach (e.g. historical, method, clarification of concepts, theoretical)

Essay which conveys a topic, where the author’s professional knowledge has provided opportunity to express a specific argumentation and/or attitude to the topic. The following should be emphasized:

  • That the text is rounded off and relevant
  • The significance for new thoughts and ideas
  • That the text fascinates and challenges the reader with surprising phrases and viewpoints

Apart from this we happily receive relevant book reviews. These should not be more than 1500 words.

Size: Original research articles and review articles should not exceed 15 pages, essays should not exceed 5 pages. One page is here appr. 2400 characters  with 1,5  line space.

Manuscripts should be written according to correct spelling in one of the Scandinavian languages or in English (if in English, editing and professional language proof reading is the author’s responsibility). Also, the editorial board does not have capacity to proofread Norwegian or Swedish manuscripts and it is the author’s responsibility to secure proof reading on such submissions. Clear, precise language without jargon or clichés is required. Use as few fonts as possible and avoid special codes of any kind. Use italics to emphasize. Word documents are preferred.

Articles must further contain and be set up according to this standard:

  • Title page with author(s), institutions, title (both in original language and in English) and corresponding author.
  • Abstract (max 250 words)
  • Abstract in English (max 250 words).
  • Brief author description (max 50 words)
  • Text with subsections, quotations, notes and references
  • Possible illustrations, tables, figures with explanatory texts and sources
  • Notes (end notes)
  • References

Reference list

References should follow the output style of Social Science & Medicine (can be downloaded here to RefMan and to EndNote). It is the author’s responsibility that the reference list is correct according to the required output style.

Literature references should be placed in the text in italics like this (Surname, 1993). When up to 4 authors they are separated with a comma and an ‘&’ before the last author, e.g. (Surname1, Surname2, Surname3 & Surname4, 1993). When 5 or more authors the first author is mentioned followed by ‘et al.’, e.g. (Surname1 et al., 1998).

The reference list is arranged alphabetically after surname and chronologically for an author who has several publications in the list. The author is written with Surname and initials (max two), e.g. : Surname1, I.J. When there are more authors, all names are written and with an ‘&’ before the last author.

Web references are given with at least full URL and information on when the website was visited. Web-references should if possible be placed in the text in the same way as other references.

Notes are put after the text and the note number is placed in the text with raised brevier. Write the notes manually, that is, avoid using foot- and endnote functions. 

Quotations are placed, if short, in the text with double “inverted commas”. If they are longer they are placed as a paragraph with indention both left and right. Concepts and similar may be put in single ‘inverted commas’.

Submission of manuscripts: The manuscript is submitted electronically via the journal’s website  http://ojs.statsbiblioteket.dk/index.php/sygdomogsamfund. On the website you register as an ‘author’ and follow then the instructions for submission. Apart from the manuscript we need the following:

Author description which should inform about education, employment and research field. Max 50 words.

The journal is responsible for the final editing, proofreading and lay-out. Commas (in Danish texts) will be set after the recommendations of the Danish Language Advisory Committee. It is the author’s responsibility that the reference list is correct according to the required output style.

The journal does not promise to publish articles, neither invited nor uninvited. Only qualified manuscripts will be sent to peer review. After peer review and revision of manuscript the editorial board may assess 1) that the manuscript is ready for editing and proofreading/publication, 2) that the manuscript should undergo further review based on comments from the editorial board, or 3) that the manuscript is rejected.
