Hagiografien som genre inden for religionsvidenskaben

Med ’Hugging Amma’ som eksempel

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this article is to encourage us within religious studies to have a greater focus on the hagiography ‒ not only as a special genre, but also as a good analytical tool for understanding lived religion both in history and in the present, as it arises around a representation of a charismatic person. The primary purpose of a hagiography is not to portray a person as historically accurate as possible, but to justify why this person is specially chosen or represents or incarnates the transcendent world on earth. This I understand as a fantastic window and thus also a source of the historical, social and cultural context in which a given hagiography is produced. In the article I will distinguish between a historical and a contemporary hagiography and give an overview analysis of a contemporary hagiography written about the living, globally recognized female guru Amritanandamayi (b. 1953).

DANSK RESUME: Formålet med denne artikel er at opfordre til, at vi inden for religionsvidenskaben har et større fokus på hagiografien ‒ ikke kun som en særlig genre, men også som et godt analytisk redskab til at forstå levet religion både i historien og i nutiden, sådan som den kan opstå omkring fremstillingen af en karismatisk person. Hagiografien har ikke som sit primære formål at skildre en person så historisk præcist som muligt, men at begrunde hvorfor denne person er særligt udvalgt eller repræsenterer, evt. inkarnerer, den transcendente verden på jorden. Det ser jeg som et fantastisk vindue og dermed også kilde til den historiske, sociale og kulturelle kontekst, som en given hagiografi bliver til. I artiklen vil jeg skelne imellem en historisk og en nutidig hagiografi, og jeg vil foretage en overbliksanalyse af en nutidig hagiografi skrevet om den nulevende globalt anerkendte kvindelige guru Amritanandamayi (f. 1953).
