Abstract

Encyclopedias fulfil several of the user' s practical needs, in addition to more basic needs for security, social belonging and status. When predicting the development of the encyclopedia genre, we must analyse these needs, and how they are expected to change with forthcoming technological and social developments. The analysis indicates a package solution where both the book and electronic media have roles to play, with practical finesses and added functionality for the user.
