Abstract

One approach to compounds is to analyse them as containing "heads" (Williams
1981). This approach entails substantial problems (as is shown with Norwegian
examples), and should probably be rejected. Speakers do not necessarily notice the
connection between a compound and the corresponding simplex. This is probably the
reason why a compound can acquire a different inflection from the simplex. Lcxicographers
may"be well advised to list morphological information both for the compound
and for the simplex, at least in bilingual dictionaries.
