In some lexicographical milieus, the concept “name” is understood quite narrowly. However, for a thorough discussion of names and lexicography, we must recognize all possible categories of names. After a general introduction to lexicographical functions, dictionary types and name categories, I lay a specific focus on the relevance of the quite different name types that onomastic researchers have explored so far and on their individual relevance in a dictionary, especially of the bilingual type.
2019-01-07T15:23:53+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Gamle Adam i Kobenheegan – person- och ortnamn i finländska nätordböcker 2019-01-23T10:42:36+01:00 Elina Heikkilä
The lemma lists of the monolingual dictionaries published by the Institute for the Languages of Finland contain only such proper names that are used as common nouns either by themselves or in idioms. Some toponyms are included in the mutual lemma lists of bilingual dictionaries for immigrants. Proper names occur also in lexicographical examples. The editors need to make sure that the names used in these examples are included in the lemma list of the dictionary or are otherwise well-known. There is little need to add more proper names in the dictionaries published by the Institute for the Languages of Finland, because the Institute also publishes a lot of instructive material about names as such.
2019-01-07T15:25:49+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Frå Bloksberg til Blåmyra – leksikografi i grenseland mellom proprium og appellativ 2019-01-23T10:42:39+01:00 Tor Erik Jenstad
This article compares the treatment of a certain kind of expression in two Norwegian dictionaries, Norsk Ordbok (NO) and Det Norske Akademis ordbok (NAOB). The expressions show place-name structure on the surface, but turn out to have appellative content. A group of them are used to denote places where some specific natural resource is customarily exploited (especially compounds with -hø ‘(cupola-shaped) mountain’ and -haug ‘hillock’). Many have a somewhat slangy stylistic value. NO includes more of these words and expressions than NAOB. This is due to the fact that the material in NO covers a lot more data from dialects.
2019-01-07T15:28:10+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Att göra namnlexikon – tankar kring några aktuella arbeten i Sverige 2019-01-23T10:42:42+01:00 Katharina Leibring
The first part of this paper studies two contemporary Swedish printed name dictionaries from a lexicographical viewpoint, one on place-names (Svenskt ortnamnslexikon) and one on personal names (Förnamn i Sverige). The problems concerning reader-friendliness vs space in printed name dictionaries is discussed, and a suggestion is made that online dictionaries could be a possibility where more information on etymology, geographical position etc. could be presented. In the second part, the sketch of a future online Swedish surname dictionary is presented. The help of crowdsourcing and the use of hypertexts are two potential areas where online dictionaries could have an advantage over the traditional printed volumes.
2019-01-07T15:32:26+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Ortnamnen i J. E. Rietz Svenskt dialekt-lexikon 2019-01-23T10:42:43+01:00 Eva Thelin
In 1862–67 Johan Ernst Rietz published a dictionary of Swedish dialects, which comprised nearly 860 pages. In his dictionary, he included not only dialect words but also 450 place names. This article brings these names into focus and examines what reasons Rietz might have had for including them. How the names are defined and how information about their pronunciation and provenance is conveyed is also analysed.
2019-01-07T15:35:05+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Navnestof i ordbøger – nye tider, nye måder 2019-01-23T10:42:45+01:00 Lars Trap-Jensen Henrik Lorentzen
Description of names in general language dictionaries has always been an area of dispute. A small survey of the most popular dictionaries in the Nordic countries shows that, with a few exceptions, the overall policy has been not to include names except where they are used metaphorically or in set phrases. However, since the main argument against inclusion is space-saving considerations dating from the paper era, maybe the time has come to attempt another approach. In this article we give an account of the aspects involved and suggest possible solutions if The Danish Dictionary should decide to include names on a larger scale.
2019-01-07T15:37:23+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Proprier som opslagsord – kriterier for almenordbøger 2019-01-23T10:42:46+01:00 Þórdís Úlfarsdóttir
Normally, names have not got much attention in lexicography, where their selection very much depends upon the vision of each author or editor. Proper names can be divided into several categories: 1. personal names, 2. names of historical figures, famous people etc, 3. place names, 4. named entities such as institutions, trademarks, pop groups etc. Different criteria may apply to each category of names regarding their treatment in dictionary articles. There may be a great difference in the sort of information the dictionary provides depending on its type, i.e. whether it is a monolingual or bilingual dictionary, an online dictionary or a printed book. Here it is argued that proper names should have a place in the lemma list of general language dictionaries, given that some basic criteria are met.
2019-01-07T15:39:11+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Valens- eller konstruktionsuppgifter: redovisningar av aspektuella konstruktioner i några svenska ordböcker och i en dansk 2019-01-23T10:42:33+01:00 Kristian Blensenius
This article studies how Swedish aspectual constructions are represented in two dictionaries (Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien and Svenskt språkbruk. Ordbok över konstruktioner och fraser). Representations of Danish counterparts in Den Danske Ordbog are also examined. Aspectual constructions are sometimes difficult to fit into valency patterns, which is why the study focuses on valency, or constructional, information. The study shows that the studied dictionaries differ a good deal in terms of how they treat aspectual constructions. It is proposed that aspectual constructions could benefit from also being described at the constructional level.
2019-01-07T15:45:52+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Den leksikografiske forretningsmodel 2019-01-23T10:42:37+01:00 Henrik Køhler Simonsen
Lexicography is not only a scientific discipline and practice, but also a business activity. And any company or organization needs a plan of how it intends to create, deliver and capture value. However, data from fifteen interviews with managing directors and senior executives seem to indicate that the business model in lexicography is either gone or that it does not work anymore. This paper outlines the status quo of the use and understanding of business models in lexicography and discusses six theses on a more viable business model in lexicography.
2019-01-07T15:49:01+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## En undersøkelse av bruk og brukere av Lexins svenska lexikon 2019-01-23T10:42:34+01:00 Ruth Vatvedt Fjeld
Ordboksanvändning på nätet.
