Abstract

Assuming that LSP lexicography and terminology have two basic conditions in com-mon: their dependence on the subject areas for the procurement of subject-specific knowledge and their commitment to applying subject-specific structuring methods, the paper attempts to assess the extent to which terminology, in particular, is capable of applying such methods. First, the relationship between terminology science, modern philosophy of science, and the subject areas is discussed, leading to an assessment of the state of art of terminology. Secondly, the importance of the level at which subject areas are placed within the overall hierarchy of subject areas (corresponding to levels of reality) as well as the resulting differences in the basic axioms and methods of subject areas are discussed from a systems theoretic and anti-reductionist point of view. On the basis hereof, a new anti-reductionist, functional and cognitive orientation of terminology is advocated as well as the future development of a number of specialized terminology sciences, matching the needs of essentially different groups of sciences.
