Abstract

When establishing relations of equivalence between expressions in
a source language and a target language, the bilingual lexicographer
has various matters to consider: (1) whether to apply the contrastive
perspective already when analyzing the source language, (2) what
kind of equivalence relationship should be established, and (3)
how to handle the different degrees of conventionalization and
lexicalization of concepts and expressions in the source language
and target language, respectively. In addition, modern technology
has influenced dictionary making, dictionary usage and possible
user groups. For instance, lacunae of equivalents have become
obvious in web-based dictionaries. This paper discusses these
matters – after a brief initial discussion about bilingual lexicography
and its relationship to translation theory.
