Abstract

The article presents a case study of a process in the winter of 2012 where a young student's post about her tight student finances created a fierce debate on politiken.dk. On the basis of a rhetorical analysis, it is shown how the public opinion that manifested itself in the online newspaper's comment track was strikingly simplified in the Danish media coverage of the debate: The multi-voice chorus of arguments in the comment track that the analysis uncovers was reduced in the Danish media to an unanimous criticism of the student and her post. The study shows how the role of journalists as privileged interpreters and mediators of public opinion is sometimes not only maintained online, but reinforced.
