Abstract

Based on eight semi-structured interviews with Danish data journalists, the article examines how data journalists support and justify their practice in relation to the translation of quantitative data into journalism. In particular, the focus is on how the journalists justify any borrowing of methods and logics from disciplines outside the journalistic profession. The insights are used to outline the epistemology behind data journalism, i.e. the norms, rules and procedures that govern the knowledge production. The article concludes that data journalists' epistemological considerations are characterized by a high degree of pragmatism, and that journalistic rationales set a clear framework for the import of methods and logics from other disciplines.
