”Skrevet, for at I skal tro”
– litterær form, historiografisk fordring og teologisk drivkraft i Johannesevangeliet
Keywords:
Gospel of John, historiography, literary genre, authentication, eyewitness, intertextuality, ChristologyAbstract
This article, presented to Aarhus University as the Johannes Munck Lecture 2023, examines the Gospel of John as a narrative that asserts historiographical authority while creatively reshaping ancient genre conventions. Although the Gospel presents its account as grounded in eyewitness testimony and historical reality, it does not fit neatly into any single ancient genre. Drawing on recent genre theory, the study argues that John participates in multiple literary forms—historiography, biography, drama, and revelatory literature—without being reducible to any one of them. This genre fluidity enables the Gospel simultaneously to authenticate and destabilize its own presentation of the past. Such tensions serve a theological purpose: They guide the reader toward recognizing Jesus as the incarnate Son of God. John’s narrative is thus understood as a distinctive literary construction that uses and transforms ancient genres to convey a historically oriented yet theologically charged representation of Jesus’s life.
