This article analyses a trial translation of Paul’s Letter to the Philippians published by the Danish Bible Society in 2025 as a first step towards a new translation of the whole Bible, to be published in 2036. The article first presents as a criterium for a good translation of the Bible the principle that the translation should be as close as possible – in correct and good Danish – to the original text. This is not necessarily so but must be the rule for a translation to be “authorized” by His Majesty King Frederik X. Next the article discusses a number of places (Phil 1:1-2; 1:3-5; 1:8; 1:9-10) where the trial translation does not live up to the criterium. The article ends by arguing that the same holds for three crucial verses: 1:27 (πολιτεύεσθε), 2:12 (μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου) and 3:2 (κατατομή). Throughout, the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition is held up as a model.
