Thomas Aquinas, reason for the incarnation, incarnation without sin, fittingness, Christocentrism, hamartiologyResumé
The medieval scholastic theologians debated the hypothetical question, “Would God have become incarnate had humanity not fallen?” Some, like Rupert of Deutz and John Duns Scotus, argued for a positive answer while others, like Thomas Aquinas, did not think that Scripture warrants a positive answer. This article focuses on Aquinas’ contribution to the medieval discussion. The first part contextualizes his views within the scholastic Christological debates. The second part analyses the concept of “fittingness”, central to Aquinas’ argument. In the last part, I uncover and assess a Christocentric undercurrent in Aquinas’ Christology that is potentially in conflict with his hamartiological answer to the hypothetical question. Finally, I suggest a constructive interpretation of this tension.
