Abstract

This essay targets N.F.S. Grundtvig’s conception of the Christian church. That is, it seeks to sketch the ‘corporate mentality’ driving Grundtvig’s understanding of the Christian church as a historical phenomenon and as an institution. Gravitating towards an analysis of the hymn “Advocate, on earth Your sighing” (“Talsmand! som paa Jorderige), I argue that Grundtvig as a church official and as a hymnwriter wished to offer a loyal and constructive contribution to the maintenance of the organization.
