Michel Houellebecq, supermarket, reflexive modernization, globalization, The Art of StruggleResumé
This article interprets the supermarket motif in Houellebecq’s work as a reflection on globalization. This motif, which is present in novels, essays, poems, and photographs, is related to a new kind of localization that takes place in a deterritorialized space. Houellebecq’s supermarkets are thus detached from their surroundings, but they are also places where individuals consume products from the entire world, including minutely localized products (such as Pont-l’Évêque cheese). This dynamic is studied in “Distribution–Consumption”, from The Art of Struggle. The structure of the poem binds together the consumer and the objects into a whole, while simultaneously exposing its inhuman artificiality. This is interpreted as an expression of what Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens call “reflexive modernization”: the world is compressed into a single “place”, but the intimate lifeworld of the individual becomes, by the same token, entangled in an unknowable spacetime.Referencer
