The situations, positions, and identities of parents, particularly mothers, are affected and change when their children are diagnosed with an impairment. The increase in the number of children given a (neuro)psychiatric diagnosis makes the situation of these children’s parents a relevant topic of study. Based on specific examples, I show how processes of stigmati- sation, problematisation and shaming play an important role in the everyday lives of some of these mothers. This can potentially prevent them from seeing themselves and acting as ordinary mothers – at least when attempting to adjust to and respond to the new and nontypical conditions resulting from their child’s diagnosis.
