Mo(ve)ments Beyond Marginalization1

Abstract

The article is based on Line Lerche Mørck’s inaugural lecture as professor of major identity transformation, expansive learning and belonging – Movements beyond gang involvement and radicalization, at the Danish School of Education. The title of the lecture was: “Moment-mo(ve)ments beyond marginalization”. The article illustrates how marginalization can be researched and understood in ways that also produce moments and movements beyond marginalization. The article seeks to conceptualize a particular way of working within the broader area of prevention. Based on social practice theory and critical psychological practice research, the article shows how to work theoretically and methodologically with

practice development. The theoretical understanding of the central concepts of boundary communities and expansive learning has been further developed in a number of research projects. The article illustrates ‘movements beyond marginalization’ explored and produced through a research joint venture with a former biker gang member. The article also serves as an introduction to a mo(ve)ment methodology as applied to research identity transformation, examining how the joint venture gave rise to new strategies for social practice ethics. Finally, the life conduct list, an approach used within gang prevention, is presented and discussed as a prototype which can be recontextualized for use in other areas employing interventional methods, such as inclusion in primary schools.
