Sarah Kirkegaard Jensen Jacob Klitmøller The Danish field of Critical ethnographic ethnicity research in ethnically mixed educational institutions has historically been concerned with ‘difference markers’, but such markers have remained exclusively tied to ethnic and/ or religious differences. The purpose of this article is twofold: To show that such differences have multiple meanings and to demonstrate the significance of additional differences. By analyzing empirical data from both the Critical ethnographic ethnicity research literature and our own research, we argue that researchers may increase the possibility of empirically grasping differences that matter to children and youngsters in educational institutions by staying close to the ‘everyday’ (school/institutional) life of students.
