Resumé

«Winged words» is often deseribed as one speeialised eategory among several types of fixed frases in
language. It is however doubtful whethcr «Winged words» is a category thai can bc isolated on linguistic
criteria, at any rate if one uses the eritcria normally applicd to separate f.i. provcrbs from «fixcd
usagc». This paper discusses the dclimiting process of «winged words» and claims intertcxtuality as the
decisive criterion. The exprcssion intertextuality is taken to cxprcss that a text, or a multi word expression,
is rclated to another text or multi word expression and thus mcdiatcd into the language through
another text. «Winged words» can be uscd and understood without knowlcdge of litcrary origin, but
give a di fTerent meaning to the language user who reeognises the original quotation in the ex pression.
