Resumé

The Icelandic language policy aims at maintaining the fundamentals of the old language, and at the same time the language is supposed to cope with the new concepts of modern society. This policy is strongly supported by the Icelandic people. Purposeful introduction of Icelandic neologisms can be dated back to the 18th century, but systematic terminological work started in 1919. This work is now performed mainly by dozens of terminological committees. An Icelandic dictionary of information technology, 3rd issue, was published in the beginning of the year 1998. Different types of neologisms are discussed, together with some examples and aspects selected from the revision of this dictionary. The revision work was performed with extensive use of computer-assisted methods. An Icelandic word bank on the Internet was established in November 1997 by the Icelandic Language Institute.
