Resumé

A new edition of “Skandinavisk ordbok” (Scandinavian Dictionary) is in
preparation. An examination of the editing principles is therefore appropriate. The
following is a discussion of the editing principles of the dictionary.
“Skandinavisk ordbok” contains about 10,000 words divided almost equally
between the three languages – Danish, Norwegian and Swedish – presented in
separate lists. Only those words are included that could be obstacles when a speaker
of one of the languages is confronted with the other two languages, i.e. false friends
and unique words. All the words represent potential difficulties for the speakers of
one language confronted with the two other languages.
It is a comprehension dictionary, meant only to be used in decoding texts, and
not to be used when translating or interpreting.
The following questions are discussed: 1) Would one single list be better? 2)
Should false friends be marked? 3) Should a common meaning be presented in the
definitions? If one is strictly holding on to the idea of a comprehension dictionary
the answer is no to the two last questions. Therefore, false friends are not marked.
But the editors have allowed themselves a deviation from the principles in
connection with question no. 3.
