Resumé

Conditions for major national encyclopaedias have deteriorated dramatically in recent
years, as the Internet and Wikipedia grow stronger through the enormous influx
of free user generated content. National encyclopaedias are still considered to be
invaluable as cultural institutions and as sources of validated content from visible
experts and academics. This article presents a model which Norway’s national encyclopaedia
publisher Kunnskapsforlaget believes will ensure the future existence of
Store norske leksikon and national encyclopaedias in general. The main feature is to
open the Internet edition of the encyclopaedia for direct, spontaneous, web browser
editing from afar, as in Wikipedia, but to reserve such access for the hand chosen
panel of topic experts only.
