Abstract

When the so-called 'submarine case' started, a concurrent extensive police investigation and media coverage of the accused murderer Peter Madsen and the missing/dead journalist Kim Wall began. This article has a press ethical perspective on the coverage, and discusses, through an analysis of Ekstra Bladet's journalism, the press ethical boundaries and gray areas that arise when the tabloid journalists step into a detective role and imitate the working practices of the police, while simultaneously having to deliver fascinating narratives with emotional appeal and abide to press ethical rules. The study documents and discusses press ethical dilemmas that arise in relation to motive speculation in particular, use of sources, and when the main suspect is known to the public.
