Tredjepersonsfortællerens funktioner i nyere skandinavisk fortællende journalistik

The third-person narrator is the default choice in narrative journalism, but remarkably understudied in journalism research. This leaves not only the third-person narrator, but also journalists' role in staging the third-person narrator as a blind spot in narrative journalism. In this article, we therefore introduce a rhetorical-narratological perspective on the third-person narrator and its functions in narrative journalism. By analyzing three examples of recent Scandinavian narrative journalism, we show how the third-person narrator may appear more or less overtly in journalistic narratives depending on to what extent the narrator fulfills the narrator functions of reporting, interpreting, and evaluating directly or indirectly. Based on our analyses, we conclude that no matter how covert the third-person narrator is in narrative journalism, journalists cannot evade neither their role as the creative force behind the narrator nor their responsibility for the relationships they create with their audiences and the moral values their narratives communicate.
