Resumé

In May 2025, the Danish Bible Society released a trial translation into Danish of the Gospel of Mark and other selected biblical texts. This article presents a philological and linguistic critique of the Gospel of Mark, chapter 1 of that translation. The analysis identifies significant deviations from the Greek source text with respect to linguistic fidelity, stylistic nuance, and contextual coherence. The translation frequently replaces the original’s plain, vernacular narrative style with paraphrastic and interpretive renderings, thereby obscuring essential textual features such as the historical present, the recurrent use of καί, and the seemingly redundant participles λέγων/λέγοντες. Moreover, it introduces unwarranted lexical refinements—such as rendering λέγει as ἀπεκρίθη—and neglects rhetorical phenomena including anacoluthon (v. 4) and metonymic hyperbole (v. 5). Modern conceptual frameworks are at times imposed, while culturally embedded expressions, notably the Hebraism καὶ ἐγένετο (v. 9), are omitted. Collectively, these choices detach the narrative from its linguistic, cultural, and geographical milieu, and contravene the stated translation principles of the Danish Bible Society. The critique emphasizes the necessity of preserving textual authenticity and stylistic integrity as central criteria in contemporary biblical translation practice.
