"Uden indre Logik": Organicisme, Neo-Riemannian Theory og Hilda Sehesteds Sange

Resumé

Hilda Sehesteds sange blev i 1915 beskrevet som værende "uden indre Logik" og som manglende "den store Gestus", "det store Aandedrag" og "de store Linjer". Dette er en påstand som går igen i receptionen af mange kvindelige komponister - at de ikke kan skrive "logisk" og "sammenhængende". 

Formålet med nærværende artikel er tredelt: På den ene side ønsker jeg (i del I) at vise, at nedvurderingen af den kvindelige komponist er tæt forbundet med organicismeparadigmet – eller, sagt anderledes, at organicismeparadigmet i sig selv er kønnet. Når vi taler om de udfordringer, som har spændt ben for den historiske kvindelige komponist, må vi derfor både tale om kønsopfattelser og de værdisystemer, der ligger bag musikalske værdidomme – hvoraf organicisme er ét blandt flere væsentlige. På den anden side ønsker jeg (i del II) at foreslå en gentænkning af organicismen, som trods en belastet historie kan sætte ord på forskellige kvaliteter ved musik. Ved at inddrage analytiske tilgange, som er mere procesorienterede end dem, som lægger sig op ad de ”gamle” organicismer, kan man fremhæve nye sider af musikken. Det tredje delmål er at vise, at dette er særlig relevant i Sehesteds musik. Til dette formål introducerer jeg kort til den amerikanske teoriretning neo-Riemannian theory (del III), og jeg præsenterer tre korte analyser af tre Sehested-sange (del IV). De tre delmål er tilsammen en kritik og forslag til gentænkning af måden hvorpå værker ofte værdisættes på baggrund af mere eller mindre skjulte analytiske og musikæstetiske paradigmer med mere eller mindre skjulte kønnede slagsider.
