Abstract

Abstract
In recent years, there has been extensive research on the significance of desistance within the prison and probation services, and on recovery within the field of mental health. These concepts have had a substantial impact on both theoretical developments and professional practice within their respective service systems. At the same time, they remain relatively unfamiliar outside the fields in which they originated. Many health professionals have never encountered the concept of desistance, just as many practitioners within the criminal justice system have limited knowledge of recovery.

People in custody and individuals under criminal sanctions often face not only complex but also deeply intertwined challenges, requiring holistic and coherent responses. In this article, I therefore explore similarities and differences between various forms of recovery and desistance and examine how these perspectives may complement one another in practical work with individuals.
