Abstract

This article challenges the classic story of Tycho Brahe as a lone pioneer by putting his work in relation to contemporary advances in Kassel. Høg shows how Landgrave Wilhelm IV and his observatory played a crucial role in the development of precision astronomy, and how there was a dynamic exchange of knowledge between Hven and Kassel. The article uncovers the technological innovations and methodological improvements that made measurements with unprecedented accuracy possible. At the same time, readers get insight into the political and religious context that indirectly supported scientific progress in the Renaissance. It’s a story about how science rarely develops in isolation, but within networks of competition and collaboration. The article will appeal to physicists interested in both instrument development and the history of science.
