Resumé

ABSTRACT
THEATER AS MASS EDUCATION:
JOHAN LUDVIG HEIBERG’S VAUDEVILLES FROM THE 1820’S AND 1830’S

The vaudevilles written by the Danish poet and editor Johan Ludvig Heiberg during the 1820’s and 1830’s were light comedies, successfully aimed at a mass audience. At the same time, their author regarded them as a crucial link in his ambitious, Hegelian program of philosophical, aesthetic and political improvement of the mass public sphere. In the forms, messages and norms of these vaudevilles we may see a particular, fleeting encounter between early bourgeois ideals of culture and commercial popular culture.
